Dr. DeFreitas received a Master’s degree and PhD in Clinical Psychology from Simon Fraser University, and has been practicing in Halifax, Nova Scotia for the past four years. He is trained in a number of evidence-based therapies, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based and psychodynamic approaches.

Dr. DeFreitas sees clients with a wide variety of concerns, including anger, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma, and workplace stress. He has a particular interest in working with individuals who struggle with emotional dysregulation, that is, the experience of highly intense and seemingly out-of-control emotions.

In session, Dr. DeFreitas strives for a deep understanding of the unique qualities and circumstances brought by each client. He employs a compassionate and collaborative approach that reflects a respect for each client’s goals and values.
